Comparing with other programs
Many developers claim their product is the best or the fastest on the market. To stand out, we decided to prove our statement so we browsed the Internet a bit, downloaded every duplicate picture finder we could find and then ran them under identical conditions. Programs that we were looking for all had to be able to detect both identical and near duplicate pictures.

Computer on which the test was performed:

CPU AMD Athlon 64 3000+
RAM 1024 MB / 400 MHz
Hard disk 120GB 7200rpm
Operating System Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2

The main test included 12,001 pictures. All of them were in JPG format and had dimensions between 800x600 and 2560x1920 pixels. These pictures took 1.30 GB of hard disk space.

Because some programs had limitations in the number of pictures they could scan we also performed a few smaller tests to see how they compare. These three other tests included 200, 2000 and 4000 pictures of various file formats and dimensions and helped us estimate performance of the programs in question.

To cut the long story short, we will just show you the total time it took for each program to locate the pictures, load, process and finally sort them out.

You can see how most programs needed anything from almost 20 minutes to 7 and a half hours to complete the job while PhotoSort needed only 5 to 10 minutes for the same task. Hopefully, future PhotoSort versions will be even faster.

The difference in performance of PhotoSort Demo and the full version comes from the fact that in the demo file caching is disabled so it takes more time to load pictures.

To make the test complete we will also present the chart with aproximate RAM memory programs needed to operate. These values were taken from the Windows Task Manager when programs finished loading and comparing pictures so they are not exact but are still nice indication of the number of pictures each program can handle because of the 4 GB barrier set by the operating system and PC hardware.

With just about 20 MB used, PhotoSort shows it can handle a lot. Our biggest test included 137,490 pictures and there are reports by other users that have successfully processed more than 200,000.
